As we come to the end of 2016, NEEDS Africa has a lot to be thankful for.

2016 Accomplishments

  • 20/20 Campaign

During a previous trip to Zimbabwe I visited Chiwundura Secondary School in rural Zimbabwe. The school has a catchment area of 20km (12.4 miles) and as a result, there are more than 40 children who walk at least 20km to school and 20km back home everyday.

As a result in February we launched the 20/20 Campaign - 20 bicycles to cover 20km. Almost immediately people began to respond and money started coming in. We embarked on a fund raising drive which saw us host our first Charity Golf Day. By the time we reachedo the end of May, we had reached our target of £1,500 - enough to buy 20 brand new mountain bikes in Zimbabwe.

  • Zimbabwe trip

We went to Zimbabwe to deliver the bicycles to Chiwundura Secondary School, and we took the founder of Way Out Academy, Nukuna Halle, along. Nukuna is a qualified Level 2 FA Coach, so we arranged for him to hold a coaching clinic in Chiwundura District for primary and high school teachers.

At the end of the coaching clinic, we hosted an inter-school football tournament involving 8 girls’ teams and 7 boys’ teams from schools in the district. Both events were a resounding success and we have been asked by the District Education Officer to consider making it an annual event.

  • Sponsored 20 children (school fees, accommodation, clothing and medicine
